Rembrandt Slaghuis/Butchery. An iconic landmark in Linden.

Rembrandt Slaghuis/Butchery is one of the oldest retail businesses in Linden.
Much like Arthur Bales, Millies and the much-missed Yugo Stores,
Oom Ross and his staff have been serving Linden
and the surrounding areas for the best part of four decades.
Situated on 4th Avenue, near the corner of 8th Street,
this butchery is at the heart of our wonderful, friendly suburb.
Although situated in a big city,
this well-loved slaghuis would be at home in any small town in South Africa.
I have always maintained that Linden is a small Karoo town,
that just happens to have Johannesburg close by.

The friendly staff taking time out (pre-lockdown) to huddle together for a photo.
During lockdown, all the correct health and safety procedures are being followed.
Luckily the staff have nametags sewn onto their overalls
so that you can identify them behind their masks.
The staff have an old-fashioned view of service
which is a breath of fresh air in modern society.
Even during lockdown they are courteous and helpful.

While waiting to place your order, there is so much to investigate and explore.
A first time customer might be overwhelmed by all that is on display,
but on closer inspection, you will realise that many of the items are a testament to
show just how much Oom Ross is loved and respected by the community that he serves.
One wall is almost filled with pictures of himself and his family
and if he has time he will tell you about them.
As they are prominently placed near the biltong,
it is hard not to take a moment to stop and have a look.

There is a LOT of rugby memorabilia that covers most of the wall space.
And if you are not a Cheetah supporter, best keep that to yourself
if you are going to be discussing sport.
Normally a TV in a corner of the shop
will be broadcasting whatever the match of the day is.

It is said that you should never go shopping when you are hungry,
and the delicious aroma of cooking meat in the early morning
will make you want to pull up a chair and enjoy a meal with the staff.

We do not eat a lot of meat in our household,
but we do enjoy a braai on a regular basis.
Some lekker lamb chops that will find a way onto our plates...

Boerewors can divide opinions faster than Usain Bolt can complete the 100m.
Most of my friends have a personal favourite when it comes to this 'comfort food'.
However, I have been able to convert a few of them
to believe that Rembrandt wors is the best of the non-commercial products available.
Wors is to men what Prada is to women.
I know that is a generalization so in the spirit of equality,
I chatted to a couple of female butchers to get their thoughts
on what is predominantly a male domain.
Their insights were, well, insightful as they saw the playing fields as almost being level.
It is often the women who actually buy the meat and the men just do the cooking
and claim to know their coriander from their cloves.

This image makes me want to head outside to light a fire.
Chops and wors, do you really need anything else?

Ready to be served...
It might seem that I have focussed on the wors and chops aspect
of what the butchery can supply.
But suffice to say that they can offer you almost every cut of meat.
From the tongue to tail and most cuts in between.
If you are tired of the same cut of meat,
then ask any of the butchers on duty to suggest something different.
The shop is open during lockdown and rather than buying
from a supermarket, why not support local and try Rembrandt?

There are many people within our suburb who are struggling
financially due to the current lockdown.
Do you have someone in mind that you would like to help?
Ask Oom Ross about the packages that he can put together.
You pay and designate a recipient that you wish it to be delivered to.

Support local, support Linden.

Chineldi Pienaar Biokineticist. A practice right in the heart of Linden.

Chineldi Pienaar...

Where is your practice situated?
We are based in Hoerskool Linden in 6th street.

Tell us about your Linden practice?

I opened the practice in September 2018 and it has grown from strength to strength.

I live in Linden myself and just love being part of this community.

Meet the team...

We have a crazy group working and coming to the practice and
laughter and happiness are what it is all about!
From L to R...
On the rowing machine...Miandi Meyer is working with us for her second year
 and my absolute right hand!
Miandi has always been fascinated by health and the human body. She is passionate about people and being an Intern Biokineticist enables her
to make a positive contribution to people’s lives by improving their wellbeing.
Her interests lie in die fields of Orthopedic & Neurological conditions.
“One morning as I arrived for work I realized that I still had my pyjama top on. Luckily I always travel with a jacket/ jersey in my car.
I had to wear a jersey the whole day for work and it was not one of the coldest days”

With the ball...Kathryn Brandt.
Kathryn recently graduated with BHSC Honours in Biokinetics at Wits University where
she found interest in chronic disease management, children and sports-related injury.
She enjoys Pilates and various forms of cardio such as swimming and running.
Kathryn believes strongly in helping others to reach their goals and improving their abilities.
Not all patient interactions are about their injuries.". I was working with one of our patients and
I was wearing a knitted jersey with various patterns.
The patient really loved the design of the jersey and felt that it gave her inspiration for a new artwork.
So I happily stood in the practice as we both attempted to take pictures of the jersey
from different angles to allow for the patient to recreate her idea of the patterns and designs".
Testing her strength on the bar...Kalinka Terblanche...our new intern.
Kalinka just finished her Honors Degree in Biokinetics at the University of the North West during which
she found a special interest in specifically rehabilitation of sports injuries, children and posture-related injuries.
Kalinka enjoys Crossfit, running and being outdoors. She firmly believes in the saying practice what you preach
and that with hard work there is little one cannot achieve.

She shared this about her arrival in Linden. "I recently moved to Joburg from a very tight-knit community of a much smaller town.
Anxious and afraid of the unknown and the "big city life", I kept hearing people say things like "Linden is like a small town" and
"it is such a close-knit community" and "you will quickly feel at home".
I thought to myself that what a cliche this was and that everybody in Joburg probably was this bias towards the space they live in.
But I can honestly say that my opinion changed drastically. I have met some of the most lekker, Afrikaans, weird, quirky and down to earth people I know.
The spectrum of people I get to meet through this job is mind-blowing.
My stance on Joburg changed from "how quickly can I get out of here" to "can I please stay here forever".

And last, but by no means least. Putting herself through some cycling training,
owner Chineldi Pienaar.

What would you like potential patients to know about you and what a biokineticist does?
I became a Biokineticist for my love of people and not necessarily my love for sport. I am passionate about what I do and helping people is extremely rewarding.
I have an extensive Orthopaedic background and I have been the Biokineticist for numerous high profile sports teams.
I have a passion for people and loves her practice. She has a special interest in orthopaedic conditions,
as well as performance enhancement and injury prevention in young sportsmen and women.
Even though my background is very sport-related we have a very relaxed practice and enjoy working with people of all ages.
I pride myself on staying very up to date about new research and development in the field of rehabilitation.

Is there an upper and lower age limit for patients?
No we all enjoy working with a variety of people of all ages and backgrounds.
We have state of the art equipment in this practice and we can say that we are one of only a handful of practices
who can perform these kinds of scientific objective assessments.
Equipment includes: (I have attached a document with more specific info on the equipment)
Biodex isokinetic system
PAB
Humac balance system
Neurotrac EMG

Do you have any areas of speciality?
I prefer Orthopaedic rehabilitation like painful/pre and post-operative knees, hips, ankles, shoulders, neck and back.
But we also do a lot of performance screening for injury prevention, concussion baseline testing as well as postural screenings.

How can patients benefit from treatment?
What patients don’t often realize is that it is better to treat the cause than the symptom.
By assessing objectively we can determine where the weak or overworked muscles are
and get straight to the cause instead of only treating the symptoms around it.
This gives us a more permanent solution with fantastic results.
Do you have to be supple to benefit from treatment?
No, you don’t have to be anything expect willing to start- we will do the rest

How long do treatment courses take?
Dependent on the patient and injury but we normally do 8 sessions
over 4-8 weeks before we re-assess.

Do treatments involve needles?
Nooo, not at all. Exercise is our only modality of treatment.

Are there any underlying conditions that would preclude a potential patient from receiving treatment?
No, in fact, because we are trained in the field of exercises for special populations most people
with underlying conditions will be better for training with a Biokineticist.

Can the services of a biokineticist be used as a preventative measure or
does there have to be an injury first?
We are all about prevention being better than cure. We do a lot of performance-based intervention because of the amazing equipment we have.
This is especially valuable in young athletes but will benefit anyone wanting to know more about their bodies and what it can/cannot do.

What other services does your practice offer?
Did I mention that we do discovery and momentum fitness tests? Because we do…
Discovery Vitality Fitness Assessment:

The Vitality Fitness Assessment is made up of two parts – the first part measures your cardiovascular fitness and the second measures your strength and flexibility.
It has been designed to give you an accurate and personalised understanding of your fitness.
After the Vitality Fitness Assessment, your biokineticist will show you what you need to focus on to get fitter and stronger.

If you are coming for an assessment, please bring the following with you:
Comfortable clothes, running or walking shoes, a gym towel.
The assessment will take 45 minutes to complete.
You can earn up to 7500 points depending on your fitness level.

Solco...waiting to get back to work.

During WW2, when the majority of the manufacturing industry in the USA was focused on the war effort and marketing budgets were being slashed to the bone or non-existent, the then CEO of Heinz, Jack Heinz, chose to continue marketing his product range. When asked "Why"? his response was "One day the war will be over and I want my brand to be remembered"
Between 1941 and 1946, Heinz sales nearly doubled to $4m.
I am offering to help retail outlets in Linden with postings like this to maintain their brand profile while they are in lockdown.
So, just like Heinz, they too will come out stronger and in a better position to tackle their post lockdown marketing strategies.
Unlike the Ruperts, Oppenheimers and Motsepes of this world, I don’t have R1b in my bank account to donate to the war chest, so this effort is my contribution to that initiative.

This is the company that installed our system.
Under the supervision of Technical Director, Bernard Ridge,
his team worked quickly and efficiently to have
the complete system running within 3 days.

Why did we choose Solco?
1] My initial contact with the company was dealt with promptly.
2] Appointments that were scheduled were kept. If there was going to be a delay,
this was conveyed via What's App.
3] We were offered two quote options, with and without panels,
both of which were professionally completed.

I put these questions to Bernard Ridge, the Technical Director of the company

How long has the business been operational?
30 years

Does it cover/is it in or close to Linden?
Yes we operate from Northriding

How many staff members do you employ and where are those staff members currently?
The company employs 7 staff members and with the exception
of 2 Solar Engineers for maintenance, the others are safely at home.

What arrangements have you made for your staff during the lockdown?
Staff are all being paid during lockdown

What arrangements have you made with your staff about reemployment
post lockdown?
We have a full schedule post lockdown so will be back to normal

Do you anticipate becoming operational again once the lockdown has
been lifted?
We will be fully operational once we are allowed to get back to work.

How are you dealing with your debtors and creditors?
All creditors are paid to date, some debtors are outstanding

When you reopen will you be offering any ‘specials’ or sales in order to
get cash flowing again?
We have several projects to complete and therefore we are not offering specials.

What would you like to say to readers about your brand that will
make it “front-of-mind” once this is all over?
Solco Solar are servicing all 6000 clients during the lockdown and have a
a full schedule for the first 10 days after lockdown.
We will continue to offer great prices for all products to Linden and
surrounding residents.

How are you dealing with the mental aspect of the closure of the
business and the fear that both you and your staff might share going
forward?
We are looking forward to getting back to work as soon as possible.

Support local, support Linden.
