A tribute tattoo at Golden Tikki

Readers who follow me might remember
that I lost my ginger boy on the 23 July 2018.
In his memory I decided to visit Golden Tiki
to have a special tribute tattoo done by Busta Boltoon.

Not what you might normally find in a tattoo shop.
However the wording on their business card does state
"Arts and oddities" and I think that this might represent the latter.
Busta plays double bass in a Rock-a-Billy band.
He was getting some practice in while waiting for me to arrive.

He looks like he is about to fall over...
or the floor is at an angle.
Neither could be further from the truth.
Concentration will do that to you.

And speaking of concentration...
Emma, the apprentice, hard at work converting my artwork
into a stencil that will be utilized for the tattoo.

Once again I sit and patiently await the application of the needle.
But not just any needle, I am the first person that Busta
will be using a new product on.

And THIS is the product.
It takes the application of ink to a whole new level.
More specifically it is almost silent and almost painless.
Those who have regular work done because of the "pain"
might find this new technology takes some getting used to.
Chatting to Busta about the benefits, he told me that the design
and weigh distribution of the machine will allow him to extend the tattoo time
without putting undue stress on his hand and wrist/
For the client it means that large tattoos can be completed in fewer sessions.

As always, hygiene is a foremost priority.
Hence the plastic bag over the machine and the cable.
And the gloves...

Done and dusted...
This tattoo will be a constant reminder of my boy
who chose to live with my wife and I for 12 years.

If you are looking for a special tattoo,
or perhaps you are considering your first one,
then I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to you visit Busta first.

THIS is the reason that I get inked by Busta.
This tattoo balm that he developed is the best.
Post tattoo care is very important in order for it to heal correctly.
There is an instruction sheet, should you be uncertain
as to how to care for the tattoo.
Ingredients include Camphor,Thyme, Teatree, Arnica and Eucalyptus.

Although Ryan can occasionally accommodate walk-ins,
he does like to book clients in advance.

Bonsai Studio arrives in Linden.

This is Henk Swanepoel.
His passion for Bonsai has taken him from video editor,
to a master of this art form.

Almost any tree can be utilised for Bonsai.
As long as the species you wish to use is a perennial
 woody-stemmed tree or shrub.
Remember that it has to produce true branches
and it needs to be able to be contained in a pot.
"Bonsai" means "tray planting" in Japanese.

In the wonderful conservatory courtyard behind VDL,
Henk will be running classes and courses on an ongoing basis.
His "Introduction to the harmonious art of Bonsai",
includes the following...
Small personalised groups
Your own tree to work on and individualise.
Studio tools will be provided, if you do not have your own.
Snacks and wine by Chef Amori of VDL.
These classes will be run on a Tuesday evening,
from 19h00-22h00.
Contact Henk for details and availability.

Bonsai Studio also sells a range of lifestyle products.
These vary from ceramics to Bonsai tools.
Also on offer is a range of  bespoke soaps, scrubs and lip balms.

You don't have green fingers?
Just wish to purchase a tree as a gift?
Then look no further as there are many on sale currently.

Henk's passion is contagious and he will guide you through
the slow and delicate art form.
This is not a race or a competition.
In this space, nature and the seasons set the tone for each lesson.

Gentle hands and and open and willing mind
are the only qualifications you need to focus on while attending a course.
A wonderful way to de-stress after a hard day

Most Bonsai trees will have a similar life span
to their full grown counterparts.
That being said, the oldest known Bonsai specimen currently
is a White Pine in the Tokyo Palace collection.
It is 500 years old!

Van Der Linde, a new restaurant opens in Linden

A newcomer to Linden.
Van Der Linde has opened on the corner of 4th Ave and 8th Street.
The old building was in a terrible condition,
and this corner had become a home for vagrants.
Developers moved in and restored the building using the original plans
and it has become one of the show piece buildings in our suburb.
To welcome to both the restaurant and the staff,
my wife and I recently visited for lunch.

A courtyard at the rear of the restaurant
can be accessed by both the tenants
in the adjoining block of flats as well as diners.
Against the back wall, this cabinet houses tools
and equipment that are on sale
to enable you to care for and cultivate bonsai trees.

That being said,
you can also purchase the trees here.
There is a wide variety on display,
but if you are looking for something special,
I am certain that that could be arranged.

I have a fascination with old machinery.
This is a wonderful example of a re-purposed item.
Now garden decoration , it looks like it used
to be in a workshop of some description.

Back in 2014, I was on a coach tour of  Portugal and Spain
when I discovered THIS delicacy in the latter country.
Acorn fed Black pigs produce the most delicious
Jamon Iberico de Bellota ham.
In the intervening 4 years since that trip I have not been able
to find this product in South Africa.
Now I have!

The cutlery is beautiful and is imported from France.
The napkins might look like linen but they are in fact heavy duty paper.
Larger and more absorbent than a regular paper serviette.
An eating experience needs to involve all 5 senses,
and Van Der Linde certainly does that...
The premises are tastefully laid out, the music is not too loud
and the furniture is comfortable and welcoming.
Ultimately however, it comes down to the food.

We ordered the beef burger,
and it came with a portion of large cut chips.
No salad, but there was a generous helping of lettuce and tomato in the bun.
Before tucking into both the meat and the starch,
I took a moment to admire the crockery.
The logo almost looked like that of the Dutch East India Company
 from back in the 1600's.
Beautiful simplicity and it adds another layer to the visual offering

Up close...
A nice char on the outside, but juicy on the inside.
We had asked for medium, and we got exactly that.
The bun, tomato and onion relish as well as the garlic infused aeoli
are all made in-house.

If I did have a complaint,
it would be the fact that I would have liked the chips to be just a little crisper.
But that is a subjective comment.
To each his own and had I polled the other diners,
I would probably have got a 50/50% split.
No harm, no foul and something that can be easily rectified
should Chef Amori feel it necessary to do so.

Although there is a dessert menu,
we chose to forego that and end off the meal
 with a small cappuccino.
A good decision as the coffee was delicious and
it was served with cube sugar, an old-school touch.
Once again, it is all about the visual presentation.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to these factors for me
1] Ambience...relaxed and inviting
2] Menu choices...enough
3] Visual...all four areas (deli/bakery, mixology bar, dining area and veranda)
are beautifully decorated and are welcoming spaces.
4] Staff...very friendly, but not intrusive.
5] Food quality and quantity...delicious and good value for money
(again a subjective opinion)
6] Connectivity...There is high speed fibre Wi-Fi available.
There are also plenty of plug points for recharging purposes.
And finally
7] Would I return? YES! There is a Creme Brulee with my name on it.
I have to state we paid for this meal
and this a critique of our experience only.
Others might have a different experience,
but what has to be borne in mind is the fact that
 this restaurant only opened recently.
There might be teething issues,
and if YOU experience those,
then please chat to a manager
instead of taking to social media immediately.

GammaTek is my powerbank supplier of choice.
One of my problems is often lack of battery power
if I have been using the camera on my phone.
I have tried many "powerbanks",
but the majority drain before they can fully recharge my device.
This is where this Powerbank has the edge...
it can recharge my phone up to 7 times,
before it needs to be recharged.
