This is Henk Swanepoel.
His passion for Bonsai has taken him from video editor,
to a master of this art form.
Almost any tree can be utilised for Bonsai.
As long as the species you wish to use is a perennial
woody-stemmed tree or shrub.
Remember that it has to produce true branches
and it needs to be able to be contained in a pot.
"Bonsai" means "tray planting" in Japanese.
In the wonderful conservatory courtyard behind VDL,
Henk will be running classes and courses on an ongoing basis.
His "Introduction to the harmonious art of Bonsai",
includes the following...
Small personalised groups
Your own tree to work on and individualise.
Studio tools will be provided, if you do not have your own.
Snacks and wine by Chef Amori of VDL.
These classes will be run on a Tuesday evening,
from 19h00-22h00.
Contact Henk for details and availability.
Bonsai Studio also sells a range of lifestyle products.
These vary from ceramics to Bonsai tools.
Also on offer is a range of bespoke soaps, scrubs and lip balms.
You don't have green fingers?
Just wish to purchase a tree as a gift?
Then look no further as there are many on sale currently.
Henk's passion is contagious and he will guide you through
the slow and delicate art form.
This is not a race or a competition.
In this space, nature and the seasons set the tone for each lesson.
Gentle hands and and open and willing mind
are the only qualifications you need to focus on while attending a course.
A wonderful way to de-stress after a hard day
Most Bonsai trees will have a similar life span
to their full grown counterparts.
That being said, the oldest known Bonsai specimen currently
is a White Pine in the Tokyo Palace collection.
It is 500 years old!
